PowerHockey News Release: Feb. 2001
For Immediate Release:
MINNESOTA BASED U.S. ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR HOCKEY
ASSOCIATION (U.S. EWHA) TO HOST INTERNATIONAL WHEELCHAIR HOCKEY
TOURNAMENT IN AUGUST.
[February 2001] -- The worlds best wheelchair hockey teams
and players are coming to Minnesota for the first ever PowerHockey
World Cup. The event is being hosted by the Minnesota based U.S.
Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association, a non-profit organization
dedicated to providing a quality hockey program for persons requiring
the use of an electric (power) wheelchair during daily life.
The PowerHockey World Cup will take place Sunday August 5th
through Thursday August 9th, 2001 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
Within days of announcing the event to team organizers around the
world, more than 10 teams (7 countries) immediately placed their
name on the event roster, in hopes they will raise the money to
attend. Currently, five teams have committed: Australia, Minnesota,
Detroit, Toronto and Calgary. There are many teams currently raising
money for the event: Vancouver, Germany, Finland, Netherlands, Italy,
California and Boston. The U.S. EWHA expects to have 8-10 teams
officially compete in the tournament.
PowerHockey is a sport specifically designed for electric
(power) wheelchair users. This segment of the disabled community
is very under-served when it comes to available athletic opportunities.
These athletes are not served by Special Olympics or Paralympic
programs. The potential market for PowerHockey is the same
if not greater than those very successful national/international
programs, quite possibly making it the world's next big disabled
sports movement.
