NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAYER'S ASSOCIATION (NHLPA) GOALS &
DREAMS FUND SUPPORTS MINNESOTA BASED U.S. ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR HOCKEY
ASSOCIATION (U.S.EWHA)
[November 1, 2000] - The National Hockey League Player's Association
Goals & Dreams fund has chosen to support the U.S. EWHA's wheelchair
hockey program. The Goals & Dreams Fund assists hockey related initiatives
based on demonstrated need by providing assistance to youth and
inner-city hockey programs, equipment donations, arena repairs/upgrades
and other miscellaneous hockey-related initiatives.
The Goals & Dreams fund Advisory Board, comprised of prominent
members of the hockey community, including former NHL All-Star Mike
Gartner, will support the U.S. EWHA hockey programs by purchasing
two portable hockey board systems along with a portable electronic
score board.
"The Goals & Dreams fund is pleased to support the United States
Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association," stated Goals & Dreams Chairman
and former NHL player Mike Gartner. "The USEWHA has established
themselves as an excellent opportunity for persons requiring the
use of an electric wheelchair to participate in the sport of hockey
and we are pleased to be affiliated with their organization."
The United States Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association (U.S.
EWHA) was founded in 1996. The sport is called PowerHockey(tm) and
the mission of the organization is to provide a quality, competitive/recreational
sports program for persons requiring the use of an electric (power)
wheelchair in daily life. The U.S. EWHA was founded, and is run,
by members of the first PowerHockey team in the US.
Hockey is an ideal sport that when adapted, allows players with
very limited upper body strength to compete at a high level of play.
The U.S. EWHA's major goal is to promote PowerHockey throughout
the country and to assist other communities in developing a successful
program. "We are very excited about the future of our program and
the progress we are making," says Craig McClellan, U.S. EWHA President.
"We are extremely excited and thankful that the NHLPA Goals & Dreams
committee chose to support our program. The gift will enhance our
programs for many years."
The future of PowerHockey is limitless. It is already being played
in various forms around the world, and the U.S. EWHA hopes to work
with all leagues to develop a large network of individuals and organizations
to be informed of rules, tournaments and events. Next August, the
U.S. EWHA will host the first ever World PowerHockey Cup, in Minneapolis.
The best players and teams from around the world have been invited
to participate.
